pH and Cation Effect on Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose Rheology

Abstract. The effect of pH and electrolytes on the rheological properties of 0.5 to 2% solutions of low, medium and high viscosity cellulose gums were studied. Viscosity measurements were carried out at 20 ± 0.1° with a Brookfield LV viscometer. CMC solutions showed pseudoplastic flow behavior and the addition of monovalent and divalent cations produced a typical viscosity-reducing effect. Also viscosities of CMC solutions varied with pH.
