Human Eye Functional Changes Induced by Occupational Exposure to Microwave Fields

Abstract. Present study aimed to reveal ocular effects in occupationally exposed radarmen and to find a relationship between the effects and the exposure parameters. Opthalmological investigations were performed upon a group of 18 individuals from 2 different radar installations and upon a control group, for comparison. Significant modifications were observed in irradiated group: lens subcapsular opacifications, dull foveolar reflex and narrowed retinian arteries. Two cases of chorioretinus atrophy were also revealed. No differences were observed due to different exposure parameters in the two exposed subgroups. We presume that the effects are mainly thermal in origin.
