Abstract. Obtaining reliable individual parallax estimates for early type stars is a starting point in delineating the Galactic spiral features. It allows revealing of early type star groupings along the line of sight and distant Galactic structures. In the present paper we discuss the reliability of the photometrically derived absolute magnitudes for BIV and BV type stars. The absolute magnitude uvbyβ calibration of Balona & Shobbrook (1984) is used. The reliability test is based on data from the Hipparcos astrometric mission. The comparison is made for all B-type dwarfs with uvbyβ photometry and Hipparcos data available.
