Abstract. A systematic process for obtaining glasses from ashes produced by treatment and incineration of lead-rich sludge is investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and R-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The objective is to produce non-hazardous vitreous products appropriate for safe disposal as crushed road stones. The process involves the co-melting of lead contaminated ash with glass forming materials at high temperatures and rapid cooling down to form glass, since hazardous organic compounds are destroyed at high temperature. The stability and the toxicity of the glass products are examined in various physical and chemical environments.
