Abstract. In this study, construction of a solar pond whose surface was insulated and covered with the transparent glass has been presented. The solar pond which has a surface area of 3.5 m × 3.5 m and a depth of 2 m was realised and the effect of insulation and transparent glass cover on the performance was investigated. In order to compare the experimental results with theoretical calculations, the temperature distributions of various sections have been measured. These several sensors and thermocouples were placed to different depths within the pond and insulated walls as well as to various points of the insulating material placed through the walls of the pond. Furthermore, a model has been also developed to predict the thermal behaviour. By measuring the temperature values of various points of the pond at various dates the temperature profiles of the walls as well as that of salt water within the pond have been obtained. The results have been in agreement with the expected production by solar energy reaching to the region and meteorological air conditions.
