Abstract. Mathematical models and results of calculations of the temperature distributions and the shapes of melted zones at electron beam welding and melting are described. Due to the assumptions in the physical models an exact evaluation of the experimental results is difficult. It is demonstrated, that on base of statistical analysis of the experimental and/or calculated data is possible to predict technological results as well as to do choice of the processing parameters for obtaining desirable results at application of these progressive technologies for manufacturing of pure metals and alloys and for joining of metal parts. The value of PIH is defined as main characteristic of EB welding, considering it as a self-organization process. It is shown at EB melting, that some segments of the contact zone ingot/crucible temporally transfer heat as liquid/so lid heat contacts. In the next moment a solid scull is created and contact become solid/solid. As a result the adjacent segments are melted and for short time a good heat contact occurs, after that they are solidified and neighboring solid segments go to the melted state. Such non-steady process determine roughness of the ingot wall and in this way the yield of re-melted and refined metal.
