Abstract. Results from multifrequency soil moisture research experiments carried out by the Airborn Laboratory IL-18 of the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics, the Ukranian Academy of Sciences are presented. The surroundings of the Irrigation Kara Kum Canal in the Karakum Desert were studied. The soil moisture estimate was made on the basis of data collected by SLARs in the mm and cm ranges using the method of small perturbations and the empirical dielectric mixing model.
