Abstract. We present here an effective index-coupled mode model describing the action of a fiber-to-planar (rectangular) waveguide evanescent field coupler, which takes into account the real two-dimensional feature of the waveguide cross-sections. In addition to the increased speed of calculation compared to the earlier model of Marcuse, the effective index method-coupled mode theory model describes the coupling from a fiber to a real rectangular waveguide with a finite width.
