Abstract. The effective equation for the cluster relative-motion function of the ini?tial and final channels in the nuclear reaction d + t → n + α is derived within the adiabatic approach. An effective energy-dependent potential is constructed by projecting on the open channels and its asymptolics are studied at large intercluster distances. The asymptotic boundary conditions for the effective system are extracted from the known asymptotics of the microscopic wave function of the five-body system. The connection between these equations and the resonating group model is analysed.
