Aspects of Biomembrane Based Sensors Design

Abstract. Recent approaches based on concepts of biomembrane mimetic systems in regard to sensor development are discussed in the present article. Advantages of these approaches enabling a decrease of the detecting part dimensionality and overcoming some restrictions in the dynamics of receptor molecules are pointed out. A novel type construction of the receptor part based on solid supported thin liquid films of lipid molecules is described. The formation and stability of such films as well as their interactions with electroactive species are discussed. Some prospects with respect to realization of sensors with electrochemical signal transduction are considered.
